Why our School?

History of Don Bosco Higher Secondary Schoo, Baghchung

Don Bosco Higher Secondary School Baghchung-Jorhat was begun in the year 1986. The classes began with Nursery on 19th March 1986. Initially the school was looked after by Fr. Vadakethannikal Sebastian. From 1st of April Cl. Jose Nelliserril began looking after the school. He stayed in the Don Bosco, Lichubari, and came to the school in the school bus. On 12th May 1986, the school was handed over to Fr. Chittissery Joseph, the then Rector of Rua Home.

The foundation-stone for the new building was laid on 11th July 1987 and the building was completed by the year 1994. Fr. Arackal Thomas was appointed the first Headmaster of the school in August of 1987 while Fr. Manuel Paikada was appointed Assistant Headmaster. Admissions to classes V, VI and VII were taken in the year 1989.

First Headmaster of the School

On 10th November 1990 Fr. Stanislaus Kerketta was appointed the Assistant Headmaster.

On 16th May 1991, Fr. Thomas Arackal, the first Headmaster of the school, passed away suddenly after a brief illness, plunging the school into a state of deep shock and sorrow. After the passing away of Fr. Thomas Arackal, Fr. Stanislaus Kerketta was appointed as the new Headmaster. In the year 1992 the first batch of 22 students appeared for matriculation and secured 100 percent pass.

In the year 1998 the school had about 1300 student and a staff strength of thirty-four.

In August 2001, a new Science lab and Audio-Visual Room were set up. On 24th May 2002, the new Grotto beside the school was blessed by Fr. Alex Pulimoottil. On 2nd August 2002, the new basketball court cum junior assembly platform was inaugurated. The decorative wall infront of the school building was completed in the year 2003. The construction work for the new stage began in the same month.

On 1st November 2004, Fr. Scaria Nedumala, the Rector inaugurated the Don Bosco statue with the young saints: Dominic Savio and Laura Vicuna, outstanding models of Don Bosco’s educational method, in the presence of the students and teachers.

Permanent Recognition Under SEBA

One of the significant events in the history of Don Bosco School, Baghchung was the permanent recognition of the school under SEBA.

In the year 2007, the student enrollment of the school was 1476 with a staff strength of thirty-three. In the HSLC examinations of 2007, the school bagged the 1st Rank in the state.

In 2008 the work started for the Junior School Building. The Silver Jubilee for the school was celebrated in the year 2011.

Bicentenary Celebration  & Green School Project

In February 2015, the Bicentenary of the birth of Don Bosco was celebrated in all solemnity wherein Sri. Tarun Gogoi, the then Hon’ble Chief Minister of Assam graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and praised and acknowledged the remarkable service of Don Bosco Society in the state of Assam, particularly in the field of education. Responding to are quest from the school, Sri Tarun Gogoi CM, approved the Green School Project of the School and sanctioned a sum of Rs. 50Lakhs towards the Solar Project. The completed project was officially inaugurated later by Sri. Tarun Gogoi on 10th February 2017, in the presence of over 5000 people.

A few other infrastructural and developmental works were also completed in the year 2015, such as the completion of last floor of the Junior School building, Junior School toilets, tiling and marbling of the High School Verandahs, new toilets for the High School and a new ATM outlet with a canteen attached.

The school year 2016 started off with a new PA system installed in every classroom, verandahs and for the entire campus. The school also installed the automated bell system which ensured the correct timing of the school hours without fail. The issuing and receiving of Nursery applications online made the entire process convenient for the parents and the school.

A renovated entrance of the school as well as a spacious Principal’s office was a welcome surprise to the Parents and the students as they came to the school at the beginning of the year 2017. HSLC results showed three students securing ranks, one receiving 9th Rank and two students securing 10th Rank.

ATAL Tinkering Lab & Other Facilities

ATAL Tinkering Lab is a Central Government Scheme for the establishment of Science and Technology Labs in Schools and Colleges. Don Bosco was selected for the same and it was inaugurated on 11th August 2017.

Junior School was given a facelift by renovating it with tiles and marbles. A 500 litre/hr mineral drinking water project was set up in the school campus and inaugurated on 17th October 2017, on the 1st Foundation Day celebrations of the Alumni Association. The school also set up CCTV surveillance at all the important locations. The school also began a functional and user-friendly website to enable the parents, teachers and students to get access to important information regarding the academic and other programmes of the institution.

23rd February 2019 was marked as a memorable day in the history of Don Bosco School, Baghchung, as the inauguration of a well set up children’s park was a much-desired need for a protected and free space for the Junior Section students of the school.

Present Strength of the School

At present the school has a strength of 2337 students. There are 70 members in the teaching staff. There are 18 members in the Non-Teaching Staff.

The year 2025 marked a period of remarkable development and strategic growth for the school. Several significant collaborations were established to enhance both the academic and infrastructural strength of the institution.

Collaboration with Physics Wallah

The school partnered with Healthtek, elevating the quality of its infirmary services and reinforcing its commitment to student well-being. In the academic domain, a collaboration with Physics Wallah provided students with advanced learning resources and enriched JEE and NEET focused instruction. A major milestone was achieved in October 2025, when the school was selected by the British Council further strengthened its technological and innovation landscape through a tie-up with STEM, expanding hands-on learning opportunities for students an accomplishment that added substantial prestige and recognition to the institution. This affiliation affirmed the school’s dedication to global standards in education and cultural exchange.

Together, these developments made 2025 a landmark year, significantly contributing to the school’s continued growth and excellence.
